Fishery sector in India plays a vital role in the Indian economy. India is the third largest fish producing country and the second largest aquaculture fish producer in the world. It provides a major share of the national income, exports, food and nutritional security and employment generation. In the present paper, patterns of fish production and consumption, fish seed production and fish disposition in the country and its states have been extensively explored. The natures of fish production and consumption in different regions of the country are heterogeneous. Some states are producing fish sufficiently; some of them are consuming high and some of them low. On the other hand, some states are producing less fish; some of them are consuming high and some low. Attempt has been made to cluster Indian states on the basis of their fish production and consumption through a statistical tool ‘Hierarchical Cluster Analysis’.
